I just went through about 7 episodes of Nightvale Radio. I love it! Ingenious writing and concept. Because I am a game designer, after episode two I decided I wanted to make a game inspired by this. I could try to make a game where we play a specific group of people in the world, but I really wanted a game that focused on the broadcast. But I didn’t want to just make a game about the broadcast directly, so then it occurred to me that it would be awesome to do comedy-horror improv scenes, and then build broadcasts based on the events in the community.
Fast forward, and after work I sat down and threw together Community Radio. As per yesterday’s post, I am working on getting ideas down on paper. If they are good enough or well-formed enough, I’ll likely share them on the blog. But as long as they are written down, I feel OK.
Community Radio feels good in this form. I think I have the basic procedures down right, and future versions are probably just going to flesh out the support. You’ll notice I only have three sample scenarios in the back, for instance. I can also expand on advice and setting creation.
This is a game that I’m itching to play as soon as I can. With the right people , this just seems like ti could lead to fun times. I’m also happy with it because I was able to capture my ideas and put it to some use early in the cycle. Getting this out of my head will let me focus on other work and projects, without this spinning constantly in my head. This weekend I plan to pound out a lot of Five Fires, so I need to clear my cache as much as possible.
It’s also good practice for designing this weekend! Like everything else, the more you design games the better you get.
Anyway, check out Community Radio and tell me what you think.
